Smell (Irrelevant to effects)
This CBD Hemp Oil pet tincture has a very light smell that would be otherwise nonexistent if not for the touch of earthy, hempy undertones. The smell is much more tolerable than some flavored pet tinctures that carry the strong aroma of bacon, beef, or otherwise. The smell isn’t necessarily “desirable” for dogs (the tincture is unflavored), but it doesn’t have an undesirable smell at all.
Taste (Irrelevant to effects)
We didn’t try it (although we could have―the ingredients are just as wholesome as CBDfx’s other tinctures), but it smells like a very mild version of other unflavored, hemp tinctures. With only CBD rich hemp oil and MCT oil as ingredients, it probably tastes mildly earthy and mostly plain.
The oil is light and thin, transparent, and pretty easy to measure with the markings on the bulb syringe. It is a little runny, so it may be difficult to place directly in the pet’s mouth. However, the consistency of this oil makes it easy to mix into peanut butter, wet dog food, or another treat your pet will love. It could easily be dropped on top of your pet’s regular dry food, too.
Effects (Onset, Duration, Intensity)
We had only one trusty product tester for this product, Caesar, a 75lb Pitbull Mastiff mix who takes CBD every day for hip pain. Caesar sustained an injury to the hip that resulted in arthritis and many days of doing the rear leg limp. This tincture fell right into place with his regular dosing routine. We gave him 7.5mg at the first sign of soreness, and it took about 30 minutes for him to begin relaxing his back leg. Although his hip pain seemed to greatly improve, his limp remained through the remainder of the day.
That same afternoon we offered him a slightly increased dose and experienced a similar onset, where he fully extended his leg (which is often tucked against his body) after about half an hour. This time, he seemed to experience full relief, and after an hour he was able to walk without any sign of discomfort. It took a slightly larger dose than normal (he generally takes about 8mg twice a day) when using this tincture, but it was similarly easy to dose.
The big pup doesn’t care for having the tincture squeezed into his mouth, so we customarily stirred it into a spoonful of peanut butter, and he no longer had any objections to slurping down his daily dose.
Best used for
CBD for pets is increasingly popular because the evidence is beginning to shine a light on the many ways that CBD may be useful. This includes managing a range of conditions that frequently affect animals, like Caesar. One study shows that CBD helps reduce signs of inflammation and pain due to osteoarthritis in dogs. Plus, Cannabidiol has been linked to pain relieving effects that are comparable to opioids generally prescribed for pain.
Further, CBD may be an appropriate treatment for obesity in pets, as studies have shown that it may help speed up the fat burning process. Plus, studies link Cannabidiol to antiproliferative activity that may make it useful for combating certain types of cancer cells. Cannabidiol is also used for managing nausea and vomiting, and may help improve appetite in pets experiencing nausea.
