Smell (Irrelevant to effects)
The smell of Joy Organic’s CBD Dog Treats is exactly what you’d expect from a quality, meat-flavored treat for pups. The smell is rather pungent and not so pleasant to the human nose, but seemed to excite our product testers who were watering at the mouth when we opened the bag. The product doesn’t have a “flavor” listed but includes beef liver, bacon flavor, and sweet potato that makes up the salty-sweet aroma.
Taste (Irrelevant to effects)
We didn’t try them for ourselves, but there were no complaints from our furry friends. Both dogs happily gobbled them down and readily begged for more. We assume the taste is mostly dependent on the beef and bacon ingredients, so it’s likely suitable for most pets.
Consistency
We were particularly excited that these treats were soft and chewy, which makes them great for dogs big and small. They are still firm enough to be easy to store and to feed without any mess at all. However, our older dog had no trouble with the soft chew, despite his weakened teeth.
Effects (Onset, Duration, Intensity)
We had two product testers for Joy Organic’s treats. One, a 75-pound pit-mastiff named Caesar eagerly gobbled down three of the 2mg treats the first time. Caesar, who had a hip injury in the past, often suffers from inflammation and pain at the injury site that causes him to limp. At first, there was no sign of any effects from the treats. However, edible-style CBD notoriously takes longer to take effect since it must be metabolized through the digestive process. With a little patience, Caesar’s limp began to subside after about 45 minutes. After three days of consistent use, we found that two treats in the morning and two treats at night is plenty to keep him pain-free all day!
Our second tester, Lazlo (Caesar’s very best Daschund friend), weighs only 25 pounds and was given only one 2mg treat, though he would have happily vacuumed up more. Lazlo’s circumstances are a bit different since his troubles are a bit less physically obvious. The small pup suffers from tail-tucking anxiety, especially during car rides or around strangers. We decided to give Lazlo his dose about an hour before a trip to the doggy park. We couldn’t ask him, but he definitely seemed a lot more relaxed than usual, and he definitely didn’t have any adverse effects. All in all, both dogs seemed to benefit from the small doses, and the dog treats were an easy way to distribute CBD every time.
Best Used For
Because dogs have an endocannabinoid system just like humans, the effects of CBD are often the same. CBD has been linked to a number of benefits, like anti-inflammatory effects that may help treat arthritis or other inflammatory conditions. In fact, studies show that cannabidiol may help decrease pain and increase activity levels in dogs with osteoarthritis. Another prominent benefit of cannabidiol is its ability to help manage pain, and many people find that it’s a suitable alternative to prescription pain medications, even for dogs. These CBD dog treats have other positive effects on your dog’s mood, sleep, and anxiety, too. Other studies have even shown that CBD has the potential to treat multiple chronic conditions, like cardiovascular disease, cancer, epilepsy, autoimmune disorders, and more.
