Joy Organics focuses on an organic and sustainable manufacturing process, and their focus on wellness was apparent throughout our review. The brand uses premium hemp, wholesome ingredients, and natural flavors for each formula. Smell (Irrelevant to effects)

The scent of Joy Organic’s CBD Salve features lavender and eucalyptus mingling with earthy notes of beeswax and MCT oil.  Because of the waxy, oily base of this product, the scent is a little stronger than some of their other topical products.  That said, it isn’t overwhelming and won’t come on too strong if you apply it before going out. The overall profile is clean, herbal, and subtly medicinal.

Consistency

In the jar, the Joy Organics CBD Salve is a creamy yellow in color and waxy in consistency. It’s very firm in the jar, but it warms up easily when worked with fingertips, melting easily into the skin and creating a protective barrier at the surface. It’s a great consistency for applying to damaged skin like burns to shield them from harm and provide antiseptic properties.

The product absorbs into the skin over time, but it will take a little bit.  This makes the CBD salve good for targeted massage to alleviate tension, but maybe less good if you’re trying to get dressed immediately after application, so keep that in mind as you use it.

Effects (Onset, Duration, Intensity)

We found ourselves using the Joy Organics CBD Salve everywhere within a few days of receiving it:  its hefty dose of full-spectrum CBD (500 mg per ounce) makes it effective at targeting inflammation, pain, and redness at the surface of the skin while promoting healing and providing antibacterial and antimicrobial benefits.

When applied to muscles and joints, the CBD salve is outstanding at alleviating pain and inflammation (and becomes even more effective when paired with a systemic dose of CBD).  On damaged or inflamed skin, the product works to reduce redness, promote circulation and healing, and protecting the wound from bacteria.

When applied consistently, we noticed a marked improvement in the condition of muscles, joints, and injuries.  We feel this product would be very beneficial for things like sunburns, but it’s also effective for pain and tension relief in large muscle groups.

We feel like the CBD Salve is especially helpful for burns or other injuries, but it also makes a highly effective muscle rub for sore muscles and joints. Its high concentration of full-spectrum CBD makes it a powerful weapon against pain and inflammation while promoting circulation and healing.

We used this product successfully on sore muscles, stiff joints, and injured spots, but we think it would also work on sunburns and inflamed spots like rashes or scaly patches of skin.  We liked this product and experienced tension relief everywhere we tried it.

As a localized product, the salve is intended to focus its effects on the skin it is applied to.  It’s pretty compelling on its own (we were very pleasantly surprised) but gets a boost with a daily systemic dose of CBD like the CBD oil or soft gel capsules from Joy Organics.  The topical products will work wonders on your skin from the outside. In contrast, your systemic product works from within to reduce inflammation and redness all over, boosting the effectiveness of your skincare routine while providing lasting symptom relief.

Each 1 oz jar of the salve contains 500 mg of full-spectrum CBD.  At $59.95 per ounce, this works out to just under $0.12 per milligram, which is on par with other comparable topical CBD products.  A little goes a long way, so the jar will likely last you quite some time.

Competition/Alternatives

CBD is quickly becoming a go-to ingredient in skincare, and for good reason — its anti-inflammatory properties work powerfully against the puffiness and redness so many of us struggle with, and the compound helps bring skin back to baseline by normalizing excessively dry or oily skin and promoting healing and circulation.  Ulta recently introduced its first CBD skincare brand, and more are sure to follow.

That said, we’ve noticed a pattern with these brands:  they operate like beauty companies rather than CBD providers, which allows them a lot more leeway with the claims they can make.  For cosmetic products, the rules are a bit different, and companies don’t necessarily have to tell you how much of an active ingredient is in a product.

For all intents and purposes, this means that a company can claim CBD content even if it doesn’t contain enough of the compound to be therapeutic.  If you’re into cosmetic and beauty products in any capacity, you’ve likely been frustrated with products that don’t live up to the claims on the packaging — this is part of the reason why.
