Smell (Irrelevant to effects)
Inside the bottle, the Pure Relief Pure Hemp CBD Oil (500 mg) smells pleasantly like some of our favorite buds: slightly skunky, herbal, and pleasantly green. Notes of citrus mingle with the astringent tones of pine, rounded out by an earthy scent that’s part ground coffee and part petrichor (the scent of earth after it rains). For people who enjoy the scent of cannabis, it’s really pleasant. That said, it might be a little off-putting for consumers who don’t care for the herbal taste of unflavored full-spectrum CBD products.
Taste (Irrelevant to effects)
The flavor of the oil reflects the herbal, terpene-forward scent. The taste reminds us a bit of unsweetened matcha, with a hint of orange and lemon. It’s definitely not sweet and decidedly true to the organic hemp flower it’s made from, and we really enjoyed it. That said, it may not be for everyone — if you’re not a fan of the flavor of cannabis or hemp flower, you might want to choose a flavored version of the oil.
The oil is contained within a clear 30 mL (1 fluid ounce) bottle that’s sealed with a child-resistant dropper cap. We appreciate this small but significant choice on the part of Pure Relief, and we hope to see more CBD providers making the same choice in the future. CBD is a medication and, as such, we feel that appropriate precautions should be taken when making packaging decisions.
The oil itself is a light, warm amber in color and very transparent. It’s free-flowing and fluid, making it easy to draw up in the 1 mL dropper for dosing. At this dosage strength, each milliliter of oil contains 16.6 mg of organic, full-spectrum CBD. The oil isn’t especially viscous, which we like, as it absorbs easily into the mouth without adhering unpleasantly and creating a prolonged aftertaste.
Effects (Onset, Duration, Intensity)
The oil is intended to be administered under the tongue which allows some of the CBD within to be absorbed by the soft, vascular tissues of the mouth for quicker access to the bloodstream and, therefore, faster relief. We felt the first signs that the CBD within the oil was working within about 15 minutes of dosing — physical and mental relaxation and a general sense of wellbeing.
Relief from pain and inflammation followed this general mood enhancement, building over the first hour before leveling out. We noticed improved range of motion in stiff joints, reduction in mild to moderate pain, and less inflammation in joints and skin. This lasted for about 8 hours for most of our testers, which is comparable to similar products.
We were able to successfully treat a variety of symptoms with this oil, from pain and inflammation to muscle spasms to low mood and anxiety. That said, we weren’t as successful treating more severe symptoms with a single dose — some of our testers found relief with one milliliter, but others of us needed to double or even triple the dose to fully alleviate our symptoms.
If this sounds like you, don’t be afraid to increase your dosage as you need to in order to feel better. You won’t develop a tolerance or feel intoxicated. Next time, you might consider a higher dosage strength, which will allow you to take the dose you need in a smaller volume of product.
Best used for
At this dosage strength, we like this oil best for relief from mild to moderate inflammation, chronic pain, and anxiety. If the root cause of your symptoms can be traced back to inflammation (and there’s some compelling evidenceto support the idea that it might), this oil might be worth checking out.
That said, this dosage strength is best suited for mild to moderate symptoms. If you are attempting to treat more severe or intrusive symptoms, you will likely benefit from taking a higher dose using a more concentrated product.
