Smell (Irrelevant to effects)
The smell of the syrup when you open the bottle isn’t overpowering; you have to get really close to the bottle to smell anything. The scent is a blend of a number of fruits: orange, lemon, cherry, but with a sort of medicinal component it was hard to place—one of our testers likened it to licorice, while another likened it to dried rosemary that’s gone stale. The medicinal scent was mild and secondary to the fruity notes.
Taste (Irrelevant to effects)
We’ll be straight with you: this was not our favorite product in terms of taste. It’s advertised as Fruit Punch flavor, and that’s about right—at first. It comes on very sweet, with flavors of cherry and citrus fruit; it tastes like those bright-red fruit punch bottles from the 90’s, with just a touch of Shock Tarts. However, as that sweetness fades, there’s a pronounced bitterness that lingers on the tongue, particularly at the back of the throat, that we did not care for at all.If you’re sensitive to lingering flavors, plan to have a glass of juice or something as a chaser to help kill the taste—it’ll hang out for about 20-30 minutes if you don’t.
We don’t mean to sound harsh: for starters, when is the last time you had a tasty medicinal syrup? Second, Hemp Bombs’ proprietary herbal blend (which we’ll detail in a moment), in combination with the herbal flavor of the CBD it contains, likely contributes to the aftertaste.
The Hemp Bombs Complete Relaxation CBD Syrup is slightly viscous, and a little sticky. The bitter components have a tendency to stick around longer than the sweeter parts—after all, sugars break down the quickest in your saliva—so it does tend to leave a lingering aftertaste if you don’t wash it down with something.
Effects (Onset, Duration, Intensity)
About 45 minutes after consuming a dose of the syrup, we felt immensely relaxed and at ease. Those of us who struggle with insomnia found that it helped us fall asleep more quickly and stay asleep longer, making it ideal as an alternative to sleep aids. If you need a higher dose than the 25 mg contained in a 1 oz serving, Hemp Bombs makes the syrup in dosage strengths as high as 1,000 mg per bottle (250 mg per ounce). We recommend this product for nighttime use, as it may make you drowsy if taken during the day. That said, if you suffer from severe anxiety, this product could be a good option for you, particularly if you have regular panic attacks.
For us, the effects were pronounced and intense, with marked improvements in mental and physical relaxation that lasted for hours that made sleeping much easier. We prefer to take it at night, so that your dose lasts you through your sleeping hours, but you could also take it during the day if you really find yourself needing to chill way out.
Each dose of the syrup contains 25 mg of CBD, along with a proprietary herbal blend of gamma-aminobutyric acid (or GABA), a neurotransmitter with anxiolytic and anti-spasmodic properties; L-theanine, a compound found in tea leaves that aids relaxation and relieves anxiety; N-acetyl-5-methoxy tryptamine (more commonly known as melatonin), a hormone produced by the pineal gland to help induce relaxation and sleep; scutellaria, a compound isolated from the plant commonly known as Skullcaps that may aid in relaxation and sleep; passiflora, an extract of the passion flower plant that has been used in traditional medicine for its anxiolytic, antispasmodic, and analgesic properties; and Melissa officinalis (commonly known as lemon balm), an extract used to treat anxiety, insomnia, and gastrointestinal issues. It’s important to note this because some of these compounds can interact with other medications you’re taking, so ask your doctor if you’re not sure.
Best used for
Because the effects were so intense and relaxed us so thoroughly, we’d recommend using the Hemp Bombs Complete Relaxation CBD Syrup for insomnia relief. It’s likely to make you drowsy during the day, so we find it best reserved for nighttime use. That said, if you experience extreme anxiety or are prone to panic attacks, this product might work for you in the daytime—it’ll help relax you and alleviate some of the tension you’re feeling, and it’ll also decrease your stress response, which can help prevent panic attacks.
We should note that, due to the sucrose contained in this product to sweeten it, it contains about 60 calories per dose, most of that in sugar. If you’re watching your blood sugar or your carbohydrate intake, be mindful of this.
Because this product contains passiflora, a compound that can act as a uterine stimulant, we do not recommend it for use by pregnant women. If you’re pregnant or trying to conceive, skip the proprietary blends and opt for pure CBD products.
