Smell (Irrelevant to effects)
This CBD Hemp Oil pet tincture has a very light smell that would be otherwise nonexistent if not for the touch of earthy, hempy undertones. The smell is much more tolerable than some flavored pet tinctures that carry the strong aroma of bacon, beef, or otherwise. The smell isn’t necessarily “desirable” for dogs (the tincture is unflavored), but it doesn’t have an undesirable smell at all.
Taste (Irrelevant to effects)
We didn’t try it (although we could have―the ingredients are just as wholesome as CBDfx’s other tinctures), but it smells like a very mild version of other unflavored, hemp tinctures. With only CBD rich hemp oil and MCT oil as ingredients, it probably tastes mildly earthy and mostly plain.
The oil is light and thin, transparent, and pretty easy to measure with the markings on the bulb syringe. It is a little runny, so it may be difficult to place directly in the pet’s mouth. However, the consistency of this oil makes it easy to mix into peanut butter, wet dog food, or another treat your pet will love. It could easily be dropped on top of your pet’s regular dry food, too.
Effects (Onset, Duration, Intensity)
We had only one trusty product tester for this product, Caesar, a 75lb Pitbull Mastiff mix who takes CBD every day for hip pain. Caesar sustained an injury to the hip that resulted in arthritis and many days of doing the rear leg limp. This tincture fell right into place with his regular dosing routine. We gave him 7.5mg at the first sign of soreness, and it took about 30 minutes for him to begin relaxing his back leg. Although his hip pain seemed to greatly improve, his limp remained through the remainder of the day.
That same afternoon we offered him a slightly increased dose and experienced a similar onset, where he fully extended his leg (which is often tucked against his body) after about half an hour. This time, he seemed to experience full relief, and after an hour he was able to walk without any sign of discomfort. It took a slightly larger dose than normal (he generally takes about 8mg twice a day) when using this tincture, but it was similarly easy to dose.
The big pup doesn’t care for having the tincture squeezed into his mouth, so we customarily stirred it into a spoonful of peanut butter, and he no longer had any objections to slurping down his daily dose.
Best used for
CBD for pets is increasingly popular because the evidence is beginning to shine a light on the many ways that CBD may be useful. This includes managing a range of conditions that frequently affect animals, like Caesar. One study shows that CBD helps reduce signs of inflammation and pain due to osteoarthritis in dogs. Plus, Cannabidiol has been linked to pain relieving effects that are comparable to opioids generally prescribed for pain.
Further, CBD may be an appropriate treatment for obesity in pets, as studies have shown that it may help speed up the fat burning process. Plus, studies link Cannabidiol to antiproliferative activity that may make it useful for combating certain types of cancer cells. Cannabidiol is also used for managing nausea and vomiting, and may help improve appetite in pets experiencing nausea.
Best used with (Complimentary Product)
This tincture worked well on its own and Caesar continued to use it daily as his only source of CBD-provided relief. However, in the past, we have had success combining different products for Caesar, especially since he is a larger dog requiring bigger doses of CBD. Combining a pet tincture like this one with a CBD pet treat like Joy Organics CBD Pet Treats can help extend the effects of CBD. Edible products take about 1.5 hours to take effect, but the tincture kicks in in less than half the time.
Additionally, many people report longer lasting effects from edibles, probably due to the way they are metabolized by the body. A tincture dose taken alongside an edible product may extend the effects by several hours, but you may need to give smaller doses of each when combining together to ensure you don’t give your furry friend too much CBD.
This tincture costs about $40 and has a total of 150mg of CBD. That rounds out to about $0.27 per milligram or $2.70 per 10mg dose. This tincture does cost a little more than the average pet tincture. For instance, Joy Organics 250mg CBD Oil Tincture for Pets costs only about $0.14 per milligram.
However, it’s important to remember that many CBD products for pets are specialized to fit an animal’s needs. Animals also generally require much larger doses than humans, so it’s a bit less costly to keep up with a pet’s doses.
There are several tinctures available that are designed for pets, and this pet tincture by CBDfx seems to hold its own in terms of quality and effects. CBDfx offers access to all of their lab testing identified by our Buyer’s Guide requirements, so this brand is as good as any we support. If you want to try something else, Joy Organics offers a pet tincture and a chewy pet treat that we’ve tried and loved.

First Hand Review
We decided to try CBC on our 1 year old high strung puppy and it seems to be doing the job. Mellows him out when guests are coming over or we go for walks.
